Learning

Our curriculum provides an outstanding and personalised education for all pupils. Our priority is to motivate pupils to engage in learning, whether in the classroom or by their bedside.

We tailor the curriculum to address the particular needs and interests of each pupil so that they make excellent progress and feel valued, nurtured and respected.

We work closely with home schools to help students keep up with the learning they miss whilst they are in hospital.  We also have our own core curriculum for short-term pupils, or those who have been out of their own schools for some time.  We can also combine our curriculum with learning from students’ home schools.

Our core curriculum covers a wide range of subjects.  We prioritise daily learning in core subjects, and all staff are trained in teaching maths and English. We also offer a unique opportunity to work with pupils on areas of learning they find challenging, and often tap into a key area of maths or English during one-to-one sessions. Learning in core subjects is complemented with learning in other subjects such as humanities, the arts, PSHE and computing.

We value reading and its impact, providing pupils with a wide range of high-quality books. We also spend time reading with all pupils in every school session.  In EYFS and primary, we use the Twinkl phonics programme, and all staff have been trained to support early reading.

Since we work in small groups or one-to-one, we are well placed to help children develop social, moral, spiritual and cultural awareness (known as SMSC), and to express themselves and engage in debate. We have a broad enrichment curriculum, working regularly with a wide range of external partners to expand our curriculum offer to our pupils. Pupils are regularly offered sessions in PE, the creative arts, cooking and storytelling.

Special Educational Needs & Disabilities

We work hard to make sure every child and young person meets their potential, regardless of any special educational needs or disabilities they may have. Each child is unique, so personalised targets are at the heart of what we do. We welcome links with families, home schools and other professionals involved with our pupils so that we can work together towards shared goals. All Evelina Hospital School teachers are happy to discuss your child’s special educational needs.

Science

Science at Evelina Hospital School encourages our pupils to make sense of the world around them. We want them to be curious and to ask as many questions as they can. Online resources, practical experiments, visitors and group work are methods we use to enhance their learning experience. We provide an outstanding personalised education for all pupils, so that they can achieve positive educational outcomes and feel valued, nurtured and respected.

P.E

At Evelina Hospital School, physical education (PE) provides opportunities for all pupils to achieve their maximum active potential. In our school, PE involves enjoyment, healthy competition and encourages lifelong commitment to an active and healthy lifestyle. We provide an outstanding personalised education for all pupils, so they can achieve positive educational outcomes and feel valued, nurtured and respected. Our aim is to master basic movements and to develop flexibility, coordination, strength and balance with our PE lessons, which are delivered and adapted to our pupils’ needs.

PSHE

At Evelina Hospital School, PSHE has an important place as part of our broad and balanced curriculum. We are passionate about pupils developing life skills and confidence to achieve their goals. Pupils engage with the three strands of our PSHE curriculum which are Health and Wellbeing, Relationship Education and Living in the Wider World. We equip pupils with knowledge to make informed and healthy decisions. We have established links with external agencies to offer enrichment opportunities linked to PSHE topics including The Parliament Education Outreach Team and the Migration Museum and are always looking for new ways to inspire our students.

Maths

At Evelina Hospital School, we are fortunate to be able to offer maths to all pupils in the form of one-to-one or small group lessons regardless of ability, experience or age. Pupils engage in a personalised learning experience with a strong focus on informal assessment and activities chosen specifically for each child, inspiring young people to appreciate the beauty and enjoyment that maths has to offer. Our team applies a combination of strategic schemes of work designed for maths mastery, creative and interactive maths activities, and a variety of problem solving activities allowing all children to access the National Curriculum at their own level of ability.

Humanities

At Evelina Hospital School, the humanities have an important place within our broad and balanced curriculum. We are passionate about pupils developing their knowledge and skills in history, geography and religious education. Their engagement with these areas of the curriculum enable pupils to understand the world around them and their place within it. We hope to support pupils to relate better to others, recognising where we have come from, where we are now and where we aspire to be! We have established links with external agencies to offer enrichment opportunities linked to humanities topics including The Florence Nightingale Museum, The Museum of London and The Migration Museum. We also link up with the hospital chaplaincy team to develop pupils’ understanding and knowledge of their own religion and others. We are always looking for new ways to inspire our students.

WITHDRAWAL FROM RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Parents may withdraw their child from religious education provided they give written notification to the school. We are happy to discuss any concerns that parents may have regarding any aspect of the curriculum content or the teaching of religious education at the Evelina Hospital School.

Food Tech

At Evelina Hospital School, food technology has an important place in our broad and balanced curriculum. We see cooking as a vital life skill and we also understand the importance of learning about nutrition. We offer weekly practical and inclusive food technology sessions every Thursday in the classroom and on the wards. We link our practical sessions with class learning about nutrition and how to eat healthily.

EYFS

At Evelina Hospital School, we aim to provide a broad, balanced, diverse and inclusive EYFS curriculum. We value each child in our school and encourage them to develop a love of learning in a nurturing and stimulating environment. We follow the children’s interests and provide them with opportunities to follow their imagination and creativity. We work in partnership with parents, carers, medical staff and children’s home nursery/school to plan exciting and engaging activities to meet each child’s individual needs. In order to support our children in their early development we provide a combination of child-initiated learning and adult-directed teaching.

English

With English lessons, we encourage pupils to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. We are very fortunate to have several external visitors and enrichment opportunities across the academic year, including readers, writers and actors facilitating interactive sessions. We provide outstanding individualised learning for all pupils in order for them to achieve positive educational outcomes and feel valued, nurtured and respected.
