Nursing through the ages – Florence Nightingale
As part of the celebrations of 10 years since Evelina was built on this site, we thought about the history of nursing. An actor came in and taught us about Florence Nightingale, who founded many of the practices on which British nursing is based. Florence Nightingale was a passionate advocate of good nursing practice, showing that patients had a better chance of survival with trained nurses in clean hospitals. She is known as the founder of modern nursing.
Both the actors who visited us as Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole were organised in conjunction with the Florence Nightingale Museum, which can be found in the car park of St Thomas’ Hospital. Look out for our display in the entrance there!
